Theofilus was moeg na die lang dag op die stowwerige strate van Jerusalem. Hy het sy ma, Johanna, gehelp om brood, vis en droë vrugte vir Jesus en Sy dissipels te neem om te eet. Hy kan nou nog nie heeltemal glo dat sy ma só verander het ná haar eerste ontmoeting met Jesus maande gelede nie.
Voor sy by Jesus uitgekom het, het sy dikwels wild te kere gegaan, soos 'n mal mens skreeuend deur die huis gehardloop en haarself seergemaak. As dit gebeur, het Theofilus homself in sy kamer gaan toesluit, onder die bed weggekruip en bang sy ore toegedruk. Daar het hy gewag en tot God om hulp gebid, totdat sy pa of van die diensknegte dit reggekry het om sy ma in 'n kamer toe te sluit. Hulle het dit gedoen om te keer dat sy iets dom doen en hom of iemand anders seermaak.
Sy pa, Gusa, was 'n baie belangrike man en 'n bestuurder van Koning Herodus. Hy was baie lief vir Johanna, maar hy het nie geweet wat om te doen om sy vrou te help nie. Alles het egter verander op die dag toe sy Jesus ontmoet het. Jesus het haar verlos deur sewe duiwels uit haar uit te dryf. Prys die Here! Van daardie dag af, was sy kalm, altyd liefdevol, die blydskap het uit haar oë uitgestraal. Theofilus was nie meer bang vir haar nie. Hy was só bly en dankbaar teenoor Jesus.
Van toe af, het hy en Johanna dikwels na Jesus gaan luister in die dag, en saans het hulle vir sy pa alles vertel wat gebeur het. Soms het hulle selfs die donkies gelaai met kosvoorrade en Jesus gevolg na ander dorpe. Dan het hulle hulle kos met Hom en sy dissipels gedeel. Hulle het daarvan gehou om naby Jesus te wees.
Hulle het gesien hoe Hy wonderwerke doen, hoe Hy al die siekes en kreupeles wat na Hom toe gekom het, genees het. Blindes het weer gesien, dowes het weer gehoor, melaatses het weer rein geword en selfs dooies is opgewek en mense se hartseer is weggeneem. Dit móés God wees wat in en deur Hom gewerk het, want geen mens kon sulke dinge doen as die lewende God nie met Hom was nie. God is 'n goeie God en Jesus is goed.
Jesus het hulle ook oor Homself geleer. Hy het gesê Hy is die Goeie Herder, wat sy lewe aflê vir Sy skape. Theofilus het nog nie mooi geweet presies hoe Jesus dit vir hom sou doen nie, maar hy geweet dat 'n goeie herder altyd vir sy skape sorg en hulle beskerm teen gevaar, al kos dit sy lewe. 'n Goeie herder sou ook 'n verlore skaap gaan soek tot hy hom kry en dan al sy vriende oornooi en met blydskap feesvier oor die een verlore skaap wat gevind is. Theofilus het geweet sy ma was 'n verlore skaap wat teruggevind is.
Al het Jesus goeie dinge gedoen, het nie almal het van Hom gehou nie. Baie van die Fariseërs en skrifgeleerdes was kwaad vir Jesus, omdat Hy mense op die Sabbat gesond gemaak het. Volgens hulle, was dit 'n sonde om op die Sabbat te werk, maar Jesus het gesê dit is reg om iets goed vir iemand anders te doen op 'n Sabbatdag. Hy het gesê, as ons wil hê ander moet goed doen aan ons, moet ons eerste aan hulle goed doen. Dit was ook hoekom Theofilus en sy ma goed gedoen het aan Jesus, omdat Hy eerste aan hulle goed gedoen het.
Eendag het Theofilus weer die lawaai van 'n groot moles gehoor. 'n Vrou is betrap waar sy 'n groot fout begaan het. Die Fariseërs en skrifgeleerdes wou haar met alle geweld met klippe doodgooi. Boonop wou hulle ook nog hê Jesus moes vir hulle sê dit was goed en reg om dit te doen. Bang vir die woedende mans, het Theofilus sy ma se hand vasgegryp en sy ore gespits om te hoor wat Jesus sou sê.
Jesus het gekniel en stil op die grond begin skryf. Die Fariseërs en skrifgeleerdes het hulle nekke gerek om te probeer sien wat Hy geskryf het. Toe Hy klaar was, het Jesus net vir hulle gesê, “Laat die een wat geen sonde het nie, die eerste klip op haar gooi.”
Een vir een het hulle weggegaan, want hulle het baie skuldig gevoel oor hulle eie sonde in hulle gewetes. Niemand het oorgebly nie, behalwe Jesus en die sondares. Jesus het 'n rein gewete gehad, maar Hy het ook nie die vrou veroordeel nie. In plaas daarvan, het Hy het vir haar gesê om nie weer te sondig nie en haar vry weggestuur. Jesus het gesê, dat selfs al doen iemand baie keer op 'n dag verkeerd teenoor ons, moet ons hom of haar nogtans elke keer vergewe. Theofilus het net daar en dan besluit om een van sy maats, wat sy houtwa se wiel afgebreek het, te vergewe.
Theofilus en Johanna het ook gehoor hoe Jesus Sy dissipels geleer het hoe om te bid. Hulle moes bid tot God as hulle Hemelse Vader wat goed is vir Sy kinders, en nie vir hulle slegte dinge sal gee as hulle vir goeie dinge vra nie. Dáároor was Theofilus baie bly, want God het ook sy gebed verhoor om sy ma te verlos. Jesus het gesê dat 'n mens nooit moet ophou bid nie, selfs al neem dit soms lank vir die gebed om verhoor te word.
Jesus het sy goedheid aan ons gewys deur ons te leer dat sekere dinge nie in God se tempel mag gebeur nie. Theofilus het Jesus nog nooit so kwaad gesien nie as daardie dag toe Hy 'n lat gevat het en al die geldwisselaars en verkopers van duiwe, skape en osse, wat in die tempel besigheid gedoen het, daar uitgejaag het. Jesus het gesê dat God se tempel, 'n plek van gebed moet wees en nie 'n plek waar mense beroof word nie.
Ná nog 'n dag saam met Jesus, was Theofilus bekommerd en het gewonder of hy ooit so goed soos Jesus sou kon word. Toe onthou hy wat Jesus gesê het. Hy het gesê dat as ons in Hom bly, na Sy woorde luister en dit doen, ons ook die goeie dinge sal kan doen wat Hy gedoen het. Ons sal wees soos 'n loot aan die Ware Wynstok wat baie goeie vrugte dra.
Daardie aand het Theofilus vir sy pa gesê, “Pa, Pa weet, ek het Jesus werklik lief en ek wil goeie dinge doen net soos Hy. Ek het ál Jesus se woorde diep in my hart gebêre en ek gaan Hom gehoorsaam wees in alles. Hy sal my sekerlik help om dit te doen deur die krag wat Sy Heilige Gees vir my gee!”
ONTHOU:
Om waarlik goed te wees, moet ons Jesus ken deur Sy Woord te lees en dan te doen wat daarin staan. Ons moet Sy Heilige Gees vra om ons te help om dit te doen.
DINK
1. Kan jy aan 'n paar goeie dinge dink wat Jesus gedoen het?
2. Was almal altyd bly oor die goeie dinge wat Jesus gedoen het? Waarom nie?
3. Hoe kan ons weet wat ware goedheid is?
4. Theofilus het nog nie mooi geweet hoe Jesus hoe Jesus Sy lewe vir hom sou aflê nie. Kan jy vir hom vertel hoe Jesus dit gedoen het?
5. Wat dink jy het Jesus op die grond geskryf?
'N VERS OM TE LEER
“Maar die vrug van die Gees is liefde, blydskap, vrede,
lankmoedigheid, vriendelikheid, goedheid,
getrouheid, sagmoedigheid, selfbeheersing” (Galasiërs 5:22-23).
'ALTERNATIEWE VERSE OM TE LEER
“Laat julle lig só skyn voor die mense, dat hulle julle goeie
werke kan sien en julle Vader wat in die hemele is,
verheerlik” (Matthéüs 5:16).
“En laat ons nie moeg word om goed te doen nie,
want op die regte tyd sal ons maai as ons nie verslap
nie. Laat ons dan, terwyl ons geleentheid het,
aan almal goed doen, maar die meeste aan die huisgenote
van die geloof” (Galásiërs 6:9-10).
“Of verag jy die rykdom van sy goedertierenheid,
en verdraagsaamheid en lankmoedigheid,
omdat jy nie besef dat die goedertierenheid
van die God jou tot bekering wil lei nie?”
(Romeine 2:4).
PRAKTIESE TOEPASSING
Kan jy aan 'n paar goeie dinge dink wat jy vir jou ouers, jou broers en susters, jou oupa en ouma en vriende kan doen? Wat kan jy doen vir 'n hawelose persoon of iemand wat honger is, 'n siek persoon of iemand wat nie kan sien of hoor of loop nie? Is daar iemand wat jy ken wat hartseer is of treur? Wat se goeie dinge kan jy vir hulle doen?
[Na bespreking:] God is goed en Hy wil hê dat sy kinders ook goed moet wees, nie net as 'n uiterlike vertoning nie, maar uit die hart. As jy Hom liefhet, sal jy ook graag goed doen. God het Jesus gehelp om goed te wees (Joh. 10:32) en Hy sal jou help om goed te wees as jy Hom vra en bereid is om Hom te gehoorsaam. Hoe leer jy om goed te wees? Jy leer dit deur die Bybel te lees en dit biddend op jou lewe toe te pas terwyl jy Hom vertrou om goeie werke deur jou te doen.
LAAT ONS BID

ware goedheid is en goed te doen aan ander.
Gee ons krag deur U Heilige Gees
om te doen wat Jesus sou gedoen het,
selfs al hou ander nie daarvan nie.
