Teofilo era stanco dopo la lunga giornata sulle strade polverose di Gerusalemme. Aveva aiutato sua madre, Giovanna, a portare da mangiare pane, pesce e frutta secca a Gesù e ai suoi discepoli. Non riusciva ancora a credere del tutto che sua madre fosse cambiata così tanto dopo quel primo incontro con Gesù mesi fa.
Prima di venire a Gesù, aveva spesso inveito e delirato, correndo come una pazza per la casa, facendosi del male. Quando ciò accadeva, Teofilo si chiudeva a chiave nella sua stanza e si nascondeva sotto il letto, coprendosi le orecchie. Lì avrebbe aspettato e pregato Dio per chiedere aiuto, fino a quando suo padre o qualcuno dei servi non fosse riuscito a rinchiudere sua madre in una stanza. Lo facevano per impedirle di fare qualcosa di sciocco, come ferire lui o qualcun altro.
Suo padre, Chuza, era un uomo molto importante e un amministratore per il re Erode. Amava teneramente Joanna, ma non sapeva cosa fare per aiutare sua moglie. Eppure tutto era cambiato quel giorno in cui aveva incontrato Gesù. Lui la liberò scacciando da lei sette demoni. Gloria al Signore! Da quel giorno in poi, è stata calma e sempre amorevole, con la gioia che si irradiava dai suoi occhi. Teofilo non aveva più paura di lei. Era così felice e grato per Gesù.
Dopodiché, lui e Joanna andavano spesso ad ascoltare Gesù durante il giorno e, la sera, raccontavano al papà tutto quello che era successo. A volte caricavano gli asini di viveri e seguivano Gesù in altre città. Quindi condividevano il loro cibo con lui e con i suoi discepoli.
Amavano stare intorno a Gesù. Videro i miracoli che faceva, guarendo tutti i malati e gli zoppi che venivano da lui. I ciechi vedevano di nuovo, i sordi udivano di nuovo, i lebbrosi venivano mondati e anche i morti risuscitavano e i cuori spezzati delle persone guariti. Doveva essere Dio che operava in Lui e per mezzo di Lui, perché nessun uomo poteva fare quelle cose se il Dio vivente non era con lui. Dio è un Dio buono e Gesù è buono.
Gesù parlò anche di sé stesso. Diceva di essere il Buon Pastore, che dà la vita per le sue pecore. Teofilo non sapeva ancora esattamente come Gesù lo avrebbe fatto per lui, ma sapeva che un buon pastore si sarebbe sempre preso cura delle sue pecore e le avrebbe protette dal pericolo, anche se gli fosse costata la vita. Un buon pastore andava a cercare una pecora smarrita finché non l'avesse ritrovata, e poi invitava tutti i suoi amici e faceva festa con gioia per quell'unica pecora smarrita che era stata ritrovata. Teofilo sapeva che sua madre era una pecora smarrita che era stata ritrovata.
Sebbene Gesù facesse cose buone, non piaceva a tutti. Molti farisei e scribi erano adirati con Gesù, perché guariva le persone di sabato. Secondo loro, era peccato lavorare di sabato, ma Gesù affermava che era giusto fare qualcosa di buono per gli altri in giorno di sabato. Diceva: se vogliamo che gli altri ci facciano del bene, dobbiamo prima fare del bene a loro. Per questo Teofilo e sua madre fecero del bene a Gesù, perché Egli aveva fatto del bene a loro per primo.
Un giorno Teofilo udì un forte trambusto. Una donna era stata colta nell'atto di commettere un grave errore. I farisei e gli scribi volevano lapidarla. Inoltre, volevano che Gesù dicesse loro che era cosa buona e giusta farlo. Spaventato dalla folla inferocita di uomini, Teofilo afferrò la mano di sua madre, drizzando le orecchie per ascoltare ciò che Gesù avrebbe detto.
Gesù si chinò su un ginocchio e iniziò a scrivere silenziosamente per terra. I farisei e gli scribi allungavano il collo, sperando di vedere cosa stesse scrivendo. Quando ebbe finito, tutto ciò che Gesù disse fu, “Chi è senza peccato scagli la prima pietra contro di lei.”
Uno per uno, se ne andarono, sentendosi in coscienza in colpa per il proprio peccato. Non rimase nessuno tranne Gesù e la donna peccatrice. Gesù aveva la coscienza pulita, ma non giudicò la donna. Invece le disse di non peccare più e la mandò via libera. Gesù aveva detto che anche se qualcuno può peccare contro di noi molte volte al giorno, dobbiamo comunque perdonarlo ogni volta. Teofilo decise lì per lì di perdonare uno dei suoi amici, che aveva rotto la ruota del suo carro di legno.
Teofilo e Giovanna avevano anche sentito come Gesù aveva insegnato ai suoi discepoli a pregare. Dovevano pregare Dio come il loro Padre celeste che fa del bene ai suoi figli e non darà loro cose cattive quando chiedono cose buone. Teofilo ne fu molto contento, perché sapeva che anche Dio aveva risposto alla sua preghiera di liberare sua madre. Gesù aveva detto di non smettere mai di pregare, anche se ci vuole molto tempo prima che la preghiera venga esaudita.
Gesù ci ha mostrato la sua bontà insegnandoci che certe cose non dovevano accadere nel tempio di Dio. Teofilo non aveva mai visto Gesù così adirato come il giorno in cui prese una frusta e scacciò tutti i cambiamonete e venditori di colombe e pecore e buoi, che facevano affari nel tempio. Gesù disse che il tempio di Dio doveva essere un luogo di culto e non un luogo dove le persone venivano derubate.
Dopo un altro giorno con Gesù, Teofilo si preoccupò e si chiese se sarebbe mai riuscito a diventare bravo come Gesù. Poi si ricordò di ciò che Gesù aveva detto, cioè che se rimaniamo in Lui, ascoltiamo le sue parole e le mettiamo in pratica, potremo anche noi fare le cose buone che Lui fa. Saremo come un tralcio della Vera Vite, carico di tanti buoni frutti.
Quella notte, Teofilo disse a suo padre, “Papà, sai, io amo davvero molto Gesù e voglio fare cose buone proprio come lui. Ho nascosto le parole di Gesù nel profondo del mio cuore e gli sarò obbediente in ogni cosa. Sicuramente mi aiuterà a fare la sua volontà con il potere che mi dà attraverso lo Spirito Santo!”
RICORDA:
Per essere veramente buoni, dobbiamo conoscere Gesù leggendo la sua Parola e poi facendo quello che dice. Dobbiamo chiedere allo Spirito Santo di aiutarci a farlo.
RIFLETTI
1. Riesci a ricordare alcune cose buone che fece Gesù?
2. Tutti erano contenti delle cose buone che Gesù faceva? Perché no?
3. Come possiamo sapere cos'è la vera bontà?
4. Teofilo non sapeva ancora esattamente come Gesù avrebbe dato la vita per lui. Puoi dirgli come ha fatto Gesù?
5. Cosa pensi che Gesù abbia scritto per terra?
UN VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Il frutto dello Spirito invece è amore, gioia, pace, pazienza, benevolenza, bontà, fedeltà, mansuetudine, autocontrollo; contro queste cose non c'è legge” (Galati 5:22-23).
DELLE ALTERNATIVE AL VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Così risplenda la vostra luce davanti agli uomini, affinché vedano le vostre buone opere e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli” (Matteo 5:16).
“Non ci scoraggiamo di fare il bene; perché, se non ci stanchiamo, mieteremo a suo tempo. Così dunque, finché ne abbiamo l'opportunità, facciamo del bene a tutti; ma specialmente ai fratelli in fede” (Galati 6:9-10).
“Oppure disprezzi le ricchezze della sua bontà, della sua pazienza e della sua costanza, non riconoscendo che la bontà di Dio ti spinge al ravvedimento?”
(Romani 2:4).
APPLICAZIONE PRATICA
Riesci a pensare ad alcune cose buone che puoi fare per i tuoi genitori, i tuoi fratelli, i tuoi nonni e i tuoi amici? Cosa puoi fare per un senzatetto o per qualcuno che ha fame, per un malato o per qualcuno che non può vedere, non può sentire o camminare? C'è qualcuno che conosci che è triste o in lutto? Quali cose buone puoi fare per loro?
[Dopo la discussione:] Dio è buono e vuole che anche i suoi figli siano buoni, non solo come uno spettacolo esteriore ma dal cuore. Se lo ami, amerai anche fare il bene. Dio ha aiutato Gesù a essere buono (Giovanni 10:32) e ti aiuterà a imparare a essere buono se glielo chiedi e sei disposto a obbedirgli. Come si impara ad essere buoni? Lo impari leggendo la Bibbia e applicandola in preghiera alla tua vita mentre confidi in Lui per compiere buone opere attraverso di te.
PREGHIAMO

Padre celeste, perdonaci per quando abbiamo
fatto del male agli altri. Aiutaci a sapere cosa
è la vera bontà e come fare del bene agli altri.
Donaci la potenza del tuo Santo Spirito
per fare quello che Gesù avrebbe fatto,
anche quando agli altri non piace.
Nel nome di Gesù. Amen.
