“Avanti…solo questa volta…Ho bisogno di qualcuno che lanci la palla così posso esercitarmi a colpirla. Per favore, vieni fuori e gioca con me,” imploròTeo inutilmente.
Ugo era raggomitolato sulla grande sedia imbottita con un libro in mano. “Mi interrompi sempre nel bel mezzo della parte migliore!” si lamentò.
La loro sorella maggiore, Anna, entrò nella stanza quando sentì i due ragazzi litigare. “Va tutto bene Teo,” disse. “Vengo fuori a lanciare qualche palla per te.”
“Semplicemente non capisco Ugo,” si lamentò Teo con Anna mentre prendeva la sua mazza. “Non so proprio perché debba stare sempre dentro a leggere quei libri stupidi. Non sa come divertirsi, è tutto quello che posso dire.”
“Beh, Ugo non pensa che quei libri siano così stupidi, ed è lui che prende buoni voti in questa famiglia,” rispose Anna. “Voi due ragazzi siete così diversi. È difficile per me credere che siate gemelli, e ho vissuto con voi tutta la vita!”
“Lo so,” disse Teo. “A volte faccio persino fatica a crederci anch'io. Qualcuno in chiesa ha detto che siamo molto simili a Giacobbe ed Esaù! … Ehi! Smettiamola di parlare. Lancia quella palla!”
Anna raccolse la palla e tirò un lancio perfetto. Teo gli diede un bel colpo con la mazza e lo mandò a volare sopra la testa di Anna e oltre la seconda base. Anna corse dietro alla palla mentre Teo fece il giro di tutte le basi fino alla casa base.
Nel frattempo, Ugo era ancora raggomitolato con il suo libro in trepidante attesa della scoperta del tesoro nascosto.
Isacco amava teneramente sua moglie Rebecca e provvedeva molto bene a lei. Aveva ereditato tutto ciò che apparteneva a suo padre Abramo ed era un uomo molto ricco. Non c'era niente che non le avrebbe dato, e non c'era niente che non avrebbe fatto per lei. Isacco e Rebecca vivevano molto felici insieme, tranne che per una cosa….
Rebecca era triste perché non aveva figli. Ogni volta che una delle sue amiche aveva un nuovo bambino, Rebecca era contenta per la sua amica, ma dentro il cuore le faceva male. “Perché, oh perché, non posso avere un figlio?” si chiese. “Se solo avessi un figlio …. lo amerei così tanto e non lascerei mai che gli accada qualcosa di brutto.”
Il suo amorevole marito Isacco vide la sua tristezza. Abbracciò Rebecca e cercò di confortarla. “Sai che ti darò qualsiasi cosa tu possa desiderare,” le disse. “Non so perché non possiamo avere una famiglia come il resto dei nostri amici, ma pregherò per te.” Dopo essersi assicurato che Rebecca si sentisse un po' meglio, Isacco se ne andò nel suo posto speciale per pregare.
“Signore, per favore conforta mia moglie Rebecca. Aiutala a sentirsi meglio e porta via la sua tristezza. Tu sai quanto io e Rebecca desideriamo dei figli. Hai promesso di benedirci e di renderci una benedizione. Hai promesso a mio padre Abramo che avrebbe avuto molti nipoti. Come può essere se io e Rebecca non abbiamo figli?”
Passarono mesi e anni, ma nulla cambiò. Isacco continuò a pregare il Signore e confidò in Lui che mantenesse la Sua promessa. Continuava a pregare che Rebecca fosse felice. Continuava a pregare per avere figli. A volte sembrava che Dio non avrebbe risposto alle sue preghiere, ma Isacco non si è mai arreso. Per venti lunghi anni Isacco continuò ad amare Dio e a pregarlo.
Rebecca iniziò a sentirsi male e soffriva molto. Andò nel suo posto speciale per pregare. Gridò al Signore, “Perché sta succedendo questo? Perché sono così malata e soffro così tanto? Cosa mi sta succedendo?”
Il Signore ebbe compassione di Rebecca e le parlò direttamente: “Avrai due gemelli. Anche se sono gemelli, saranno totalmente opposti l'uno all'altro. Non si assomiglieranno, non parleranno allo stesso modo, e a loro non piaceranno le stesse cose. Ci sarà una lotta tra loro e quella lotta è già iniziata. Uno sarà più forte dell'altro, e il più giovane dominerà il più vecchio.”
“Isacco! ISACCO! Vieni presto! Ho grandi notizie!” gridò Rebecca.
Isacco capì dal suono della sua voce che si trattava di qualcosa di estremamente importante e corse il più velocemente possibile. “Cosa succede? Che c'è?” chiese appena poté riprendere fiato.
“Isacco! OH, ISACCO! Avremo dei bambini!” Era così eccitata che riusciva a malapena a far uscire le parole dalla sua bocca. “Dio ha finalmente ascoltato e risposto alle nostre preghiere. Non avremo un solo bambino! Ne avremo due! OH, Isacco! Non riesco a crederci!”
Quando si avvicinarono e si abbracciarono, grosse lacrime di gioia rigarono entrambi i loro volti. Ringraziarono Dio che, anche se erano piuttosto anziani, sarebbero finalmente diventati genitori. Dio aveva ascoltato il grido dei loro cuori e li avrebbe benedetti con due bambini.
Rebecca non ricordava di essere mai stata così felice. Il suo viso era radioso mentre svolgeva le sue faccende quotidiane e faceva preparativi speciali per i suoi piccoli neonati. Anche se soffriva molto, nulla poteva toglierle la gioia di poter finalmente essere madre.
Finalmente arrivò il gioioso giorno. Il primo bambino nato era di colore rossastro e aveva molti peli su tutto il corpo. Isacco e Rebecca lo chiamarono Esaù. Il secondo bambino era di carnagione chiara e di natura gentile. Non appena fu nato, aveva allungato la mano e afferrato il tallone di suo fratello. I suoi genitori lo chiamarono Giacobbe.
Quando i ragazzi iniziarono a crescere, i genitori notarono grandi differenze nei due figli proprio come Dio aveva detto a Rebecca. Esaù era un ragazzino rozzo e tumultuoso. Amava stare all'aria aperta. Gli piaceva sporcarsi, arrampicarsi sulle rocce e fare escursioni. Quando crebbe diventò un fantastico cacciatore. Isacco amava i modi turbolenti di Esaù e godeva della carne meravigliosa che portava a casa dalle sue battute di caccia. Esaù era sicuramente il figlio prediletto di suo padre.
Giacobbe era totalmente diverso. Giacobbe era un ragazzino più tranquillo a cui piaceva stare in casa. Gli piaceva cucinare e sapeva come preparare una minestra deliziosa con le verdure che coltivava. Anche se stava in casa, era diventato molto forte e svolgeva un ottimo lavoro prendendosi cura degli animali della fattoria. Rebecca poteva sempre contare su Giacobbe per aiutarla ogni volta che aveva bisogno di lui. Non si era mai avventurato troppo lontano. Sebbene amasse entrambi i suoi figli, Giacobbe era sicuramente il figlio prediletto di Rebecca.
