Maria smosse la polvere intorno a sé con i sandali e mormorò. “Ma perchè Gesù non è venuto subito quando gli hanno detto che Lazzaro stava male? Avrebbe ancora potuto fare qualcosa.”

Maria era arrabbiata. Gesù era rimasto ancora due giorni nello stesso luogo in cui si trovava. Diceva di amare lei e la sua famiglia. Erano passati tre giorni interi da quando Lazzaro era morto e Gesù non era ancora arrivato.

Un coniglio saltò fuori di sotto alcuni cespugli ai margini della strada polverosa e Maria sobbalzò. Perché? Perché? Perché? Si sedette su di una grossa pietra, nascose il volto fra le mani e cominciò a piangere. Dopo qualche istante sentì una mano posarsi dolcemente sulla sua spalla. Alzò lo sguardo e vide sua sorella Marta.

Marta le accennò un sorriso e s’inginocchiò al suo fianco, mettendo un braccio attorno alle spalle di sua sorella. “Non dobbiamo piangere,” disse con calma.

Maria scosse il capo e guardò altrove. Marta la fissò e disse, “Forse è stata la cosa migliore.”

L’altra donna era molto arrabbiata. “Nient’affatto! Gesù non è venuto. Ha lasciato morire Lazzaro, e tu dici che può essere per qualcosa di meglio! Il nostro fratello! Marta, come puoi anche solo pensare una cosa simile?” Maria corse verso la loro casa, in lacrime, lasciando indietro Marta in una nuvola di polvere.

Sleeping Quella notte Marta continuava a rigirarsi nel letto, pensando a quello che sua sorella aveva detto. No, Gesù non era venuto. Non era ancora venuto. Ma Marta sapeva che lui le amava. Amava lei, Maria e Lazzaro. Non li avrebbe abbandonati. Marta sorrise fra sé. No, non l’avrebbe fatto. Sarebbe venuto.

I grilli frinivano rumorosamente fuori della finestra di Maria che, tesa, si rigirava senza posa fra le lenzuola. “Ma come può Marta essere così calma in ogni cosa? Non amava Lazzaro? Ma certo che lo amava! E che dire di Gesù? Non è ancora arrivato. Perché? Se lui fosse stato qui, Lazzaro non sarebbe morto. Ma che importa, adesso,” pensò. “Se n’è andato, e così pure Gesù.”

“Oh, grazie, Anna!” Marta disse con un mezzo sorriso. Era venuta così tanta gente stamattina a portare cibo ed altri doni alla famiglia in lutto. Erano già trascorsi quattro giorni da quando Lazzaro era morto ed era stato seppellito. Marta scuoteva la testa.

Maria continuava a non voler aprire od anche solo rivolgere la parola a chiunque. Forse non era veramente arrabbiata, soltanto ferita. Pure Marta si sentiva ferita, ma sapeva che in un modo o nell’altro Gesù non l’avrebbe delusa. Desiderava tanto che anche Maria si sentisse come lei.

Guardò sua sorella, che sedeva sola in un angolo della stanza, mescolando del cibo in una scodella. Marta sospirò forte, poi accennò ad un sorriso mentre qualcuno entrava in casa, portando un recipiente.

“Rahab! Che bello vederti,” disse all’amica.

“Shalom, Marta! Ti ho portato della frutta. Puoi tenere il recipiente,” Rahab sorrise mentre abbracciava calorosamente la sua amica. “Mi dispiace per Lazzaro. Era un uomo così meraviglioso.”

Marta, con un debole sorriso, disse “Grazie, Rahab. Apprezzo la tua premurosità.”

Mentre accompagnava fuori l’amica, questa si rivolse verso di lei e disse, “Oh, mi è stato detto di dirti che Gesù è per strada. Dovrebbe essere qui entro stamattina.”

Marta rispose, “Grazie,” e s’incamminò per incontrarlo. Si sedette al margine della strada ed attese pazientemente, pensierosag.

Maria stava soltanto male. Non era arrabbiata sul serio, soffriva soltanto. Marta non poteva davvero biasimarla, perché anche lei soffriva. Se Gesù fosse stato lì, suo fratello non sarebbe morto. Ne era sicura. Era tutto ciò cui riusciva a pensare.

Martha Improvvisamente Marta guardò verso il brusio di voci che provenivano da dietro una svolta. Si alzò e corse dietro l’angolo, dove vide Gesù e i suoi discepoli camminare solennemente lungo la strada. Si diresse verso di Lui e cadde ai Suoi piedi in lacrime.

“Mio Signore,” disse fra i singhiozzi. Gesù allungò la mano e l’aiutò ad alzarsi. “Mio Signore,” ripeté, cercando di parlare mentre le scendevano le lacrime. “Se solo Tu fossi stato qui. Mio fratello non sarebbe morto.”

“Tuo fratello rivivrà,” Gesù disse con tranquilla fiducia.

“Sì, sì. Lo so che tornerà in vita alla risurrezione. Lo so, ma oggi sono quattro giorni che è morto,” disse Marta.

Jesus looked into her eyes and said Martha I am the resurrection Gesù la guardò negli occhi e le disse, “Marta, io sono la risurrezione; io sono la vita. Se tu credi in Me, quand’anche tu fossi morta, rivivresti. E chiunque sia vivo e crede in Me non morirà mai. Tu lo credi?”

Marta si asciugò gli occhi e annuì. “Sì, Signore. Io credo che Tu sei il Figlio di Dio che è venuto in questo mondo.”

Marta si precipitò a casa. Entrò di corsa e trovò Maria in mezzo ad altre donne che la confortavano. Prese da parte sua sorella e le disse sottovoce che Gesù stava arrivando e voleva vederla.

Maria guardò Marta per un momento, poi corse fuori. Marta la seguì. Anche le altre donne le seguirono, pensando che stessero andando alla tomba a fare cordoglio.

Quando Maria vide Gesù, gli corse incontro in lacrime. Cadde ai Suoi piedi e gridò, “Signore, se Tu fossi stato qui Lazzaro non sarebbe morto!” Maria ricominciò a piangere; sua sorella e le altre donne piansero con lei, cercando di confortarla.

Gesù le guardò e rimase turbato. Lo addolorava vederle così tristi. Domandò loro dove lo avevano seppellito ed esse lo condussero là. Anche Lui pianse, assieme a loro. Le altre persone che si trovavano lì parlavano fra di loro e dicevano, “Guarda quanto lo amava! Piange per la sua morte.”

Strong men took the stone away Quando furono arrivati alla tomba, che era una grotta con una grossa pietra che ne chiudeva l’entrata, Gesù disse, “Togliete la pietra.”

“Ma Gesù,” obiettò Marta. “E’ morto ormai da quattro giorni; il suo corpo starà già puzzando.”

Gesù si voltò verso di lei e le disse, “Non ti ho forse detto che, se avessi creduto, avresti visto la gloria di Dio?”

Alcuni uomini molto forti tolsero la pietra. Gesù guardò verso il Cielo e pregò: “Padre, io ti ringrazio che mi hai ascoltato. So che tu mi ascolti sempre, ma è per queste persone vicino a me che l’ho detto, affinché possano credere che sei Tu che mi hai mandato.”

Quando Gesù ebbe pronunciato queste parole, tutt’intorno a Lui si fece silenzio ed Egli gridò, con voce forte ed autoritaria:

“LAZZARO, VIENI FUORI!”

Immediatamente, Lazzaro uscì dalla buia grotta, ancora avvolto dalla testa ai piedi con le bende, che allora erano considerate gli abiti per i morti.

“Toglietegliele di dosso e lasciatelo andare,” Gesù disse con un sorriso.

Così, molti dei Giudei che erano venuti da Maria ed avevano visto ciò che Gesù aveva fatto credettero in Lui.
