“Veloce!” disse Ruth a suo fratello Luca. “Dobbiamo aiutare lo zio Ruben.”
“Oh no!” disse Luca, masticando un frittella. “Questo sarà doloroso. Già me lo immagino.”
Ruth porse a suo fratello un lungo bastone e gli disse, “Seguimi!” Lei corse fuori di casa e Luca saltellò dietro di lei, litigando con i suoi sandali per metterli nel piede giusto.
“Ma dove stiamo andando?” disse lui, dopo aver finalmente allacciato le scarpe. “E a cosa servono i bastoni?”
“Vedrai!” lei gli rispose gridando, mentre accelerava il passo verso la salita che portava a Gerico. I due bambini correvano sempre per aiutare lo zio Ruben. Lui era l'amministratore locale e questo significava che se mai c'era un problema, lui doveva risolverlo, e sicuramente c'era qualche problema quella mattina.
Ruth e Luca corsero attraverso le strade di Gerico fino a che….
“Aaargh!” Si scontrarono, capitando in una folta folla di persone, tutte apparentemente in lotta l'uno contro l'altro.
“Ahi!” disse Luca mentre una vecchia signora cominciò a colpirlo sulla testa con una anguria.
“Scusa!” disse Ruth alla signora e tirò suo fratello a terra. Cominciarono a gattonare freneticamente tra le gambe della folla.
“Ahi! Ahi! Ahi!” disse Luca mentre le persone continuavano a mancare Ruth ma si accalcavano su di lui. “Sapevo che questo sarebbe stato doloroso.”
Finalmente riuscirono a sgattonare fuori dalla massa di gente alla base di un grande, nodoso albero di sicomoro. L'albero era alto quasi 11 metri, con un piccolo tronco e molti rami.
Lo zio Ruben era in piedi alla base dell'albero, grattandosi il mento peloso e guardando in alto verso i rami.
“Qual e' il problema, zio?” domandò Luca, un po' malridotto, ma domandandosi il perché di tutto questo panico.
“Lui è il motivo,” disse Ruben, puntando in alto verso la pianta.
Lassù, appollaiato sui rami, c'era un uomo. Era basso e grasso e di gran lunga troppo vecchio per salire sugli alberi.
“Si rifiuta di venire giù! Dice che rimarrà lassù per vedere meglio.”
“Noi abbiamo portato dei bastoni,” disse Ruth “Ci potrebbero aiutare: potremmo tirarlo giù con questi.”
Il loro zio guardò giù verso di loro, scuotendo la testa.
“No!” disse lui. “Non penso che questo sarebbe molto gentile, e a parte questo, ho provato di tutto. Ho provato a ragionare con lui, ho provato a scuotere i rami. Ho anche provato ad arrampicarmi su per prenderlo, ma non posso proprio spostarlo. Ci vorrebbe un miracolo per farlo scendere dal quell'albero.”
In quel momento, la folla si rallegrò per un uomo che camminava lungo la via. Ma al posto di passare oltre, si girò verso l'albero. La folla si divise. Lui era sereno e calmo. Guardò su tra i rami e disse, “Zaccheo, scendi, presto, perché oggi devo albergare in casa tua.”
Istantaneamente, e senza il più piccolo borbottio, Zaccheo scese dai rami e abbracciò l'uomo.
“Wow!” disse Luca, meravigliato dalla facilità con la quale l'uomo riuscì a far scendere Zaccheo dall'albero. “Questo è un miracolo!”
“Ci puoi scommettere!” sussurrò il loro zio mentre Zaccheo e l'uomo se ne andarono verso la folla. “Quello era Gesù e Lui è il più grande miracolo del mondo.”

1. Perché pensi che Zaccheo non voleva venire giù dall'albero?
2. Tu aspetteresti in cima ad un albero per vedere Gesù?
3. Secondo voi Dio ogni tanto si aspetta che noi facciamo cose che altra gente magari non approverebbe?
