Nehu si svegliò nel panico. Era tutta sudata. Il cuore le batteva all'impazzata e aveva tutte le lenzuola attorcigliate attorno alle gambe. Aveva avuto il più terribile degli incubi. Aveva sognato di essere inseguita da un mostro gigantesco, con il fiato puzzolente e dei denti orribili. Le stava cercando di smozzicare le gambe. Si sedette e cercò a tastoni il suo pupazzo preferito, a forma di coniglio.
Oh, mamma! Gli aveva staccato di nuovo la testa. Povero vecchio Pallino. Con tutti quegli incubi, ogni volta gli staccava la testa.
“Va bene! Ho capito,” disse Nehu alla testa ciondolante di Pallino. “Sveglierò papa. E’ uno dei saggi del re. Saprà come mai sto facendo tutti questi sogni terribili.” Nehu si sciolse dalle lenzuola che le avvinghiavano le gambe e scese dal letto, alla luce soffusa dell’alba.
Mentre si avvicinava, il padre uscì di corsa dalla sua stanza con in braccio un mucchio di carte e rotoli.
“Che succede?” disse Nehu, sorprendendo il padre.
“Aaaah!” gridò lui spaventato, facendo un salto in aria. Le carte e i rotoli gli sfuggirono di mano e, dopo aver fatto un salto in aria, gli cascarono in testa. Non era molto contento.
“Il re Nebucadnetsar ha avuto di nuovo uno dei suoi sogni,” disse lui, “e ci ha minacciato di darci in pasto ai leoni se non gli diciamo cosa vuol dire quel sogno.”
“Oh mamma!” redarguì Nehu, preoccupata. “Perché non gli date un’interpretazione a caso, come fate di solito, Padre?”
“Non possiamo farlo,” digrignò. “Il Re non vuole dirci cosa ha sognato. Siamo noi che dobbiamo dirlo a lui.”
“Ma è impossibile!” disse Nehu stupita.
“Lo so!” rispose il padre correndo nella direzione della stanza del trono. Nehu lo seguì a distanza.
Arrivata alla stanza del trono, Nehu sgattaiolò dentro, nascondendosi in un angolo dietro una grossa pianta di banana. Davanti a lei stavano due uomini tremanti. Uno di loro era suo padre.
“Se quest’uomo non ci riesce,” disse all’altro, “saremo tutti fritti.”
Nehu riusciva a vedere benissimo quello di cui stava parlando il padre, perché davanti al re c'era un uomo coi capelli neri, un naso ben pronunciato ed un collo forte.
“Sei in grado di dirmi cosa ho visto nel sogno e sai interpretarlo?” chiese il re all’uomo.
“Nessun saggio, incantatore, mago o indovino può spiegare al re il mistero che egli chiede…” disse l’uomo, e tutti gli uomini importanti presenti nella stanza tirarono il fiato impauriti. Il padre di Nehu quasi svenne. Si sedette sulla pianta di banana.
“Ecco qui. Siamo tutti cibo per leoni,” mormorò.
“…Ma c’è un Dio in cielo che rivela i misteri,” continuò l’uomo. “Egli ha mostrato al re Nebucadnetsar cosa accadrà nei giorni avvenire.” E detto ciò l’uomo iniziò a raccontare al re esattamente ciò che lui, il re, aveva sognato. Era molto impressionante. Scese persino nei dettagli.
“Uao!” sussurrò Nehu non appena l’uomo terminò.
Il padre sobbalzò dalla sorpresa. “Che ci fai qui, Nehu?” le disse, sbirciandola dietro la pianta.
“Voglio chiedere a quell’uomo che significa il mio sogno!” disse Nehu.
“Oh, Nehu,” rise il padre. “Credi davvero che l’Iddio onnipotente di quest’uomo sia interessato ai sogni di una bambina?”
“Sì, padre!” disse Nehu con forza. “Lo credo!"
