           “Signora Rossetti, posso per favore andare in infermeria?” chiese Carlo mentre alzava il braccio per mostrare alla sua insegnante il grande squarcio infetto sulla sua mano.

           “Certo che puoi,” rispose la signora Rossetti mentre guardava con comprensione la ferita. “Ma ti dispiace dirmi come è successo?” chiese.

           “Sono caduto dallo scivolo nel parco giochi.” Carlo aveva inventato rapidamente una storia. Non si aspettava che la sua insegnante gli chiedesse come si era fatto male. Mentre camminava lentamente lungo il corridoio verso l'ufficio dell'infermiera, era immerso in profondi pensieri. Dall'espressione sul viso dell'insegnante poteva dire che, anche se lei non lo aveva interrogato ulteriormente, non credeva affatto alla sua storia.

           Quando fu il suo turno di vedere l'infermiera della scuola, Carlo era preparato. Aveva inventato quella che pensava fosse una storia migliore. Mentre l'infermiera puliva la ferita e ci metteva sopra una benda, chiese: “Da quanto tempo hai questa ferita?”

           Carlo rispose: “Mi sono fatto male ieri quando sono caduto dalla bici.”

           “Mhmm, ieri?” chiese l'infermiera. “Sei sicuro? Sembra terribilmente infetta per essere successo ieri.”

           Carlo aveva paura di dire la verità perché temeva che l'infermiera chiamasse sua madre e di certo non voleva che accadesse. Aveva paura di finire in gr-o-o-o-ssi guai se sua madre avesse scoperto che aveva rotto il suo vaso da fiori preferito. “Sì, signora. È successo ieri mentre andavo in bicicletta.”

           Accadde però che l'infermiera della scuola chiamò la madre di Carlo. La ferita era piena di infezione e l'infermiera pensò che avrebbe dovuto consultare un medico. Nello studio del medico, Carlo rimase fedele alla sua storia della caduta dalla bicicletta. “Come ti è finito nella mano quel pezzo di vetro?” chiese il dottor Moretti.

           Carlo esitò per un momento, poi disse: “Mah, immagino che ci fosse del vetro nel fosso dove sono caduto.”

           Alla fine la madre di Carlo parlò. “Giovanotto, penso che sia ora che tu smetta di mentire e inizi a dire la verità. So che hai rotto il vaso. Lo so da diversi giorni. Stavo solo aspettando che tu confessassi da solo. Se avessi saputo che avevi una brutta ferita, me ne sarei occupata molto prima.”

           “Lo sapevi? …Come lo sapevi?”  chiese sorpreso.

           “Beh, prima di tutto, non ho potuto fare a meno di vedere che i fiori erano nel bidone della spazzatura. Poi, mentre stavo pulendo, ho trovato dei pezzi di vetro che ti erano sfuggiti. Perché non me l'hai detto?”

           “Io…avevo paura,” rispose Carlo in lacrime. “Temevo che ti arrabbiassi. Temevo che mi punissi.”

           Sua madre rispose: “Sì, meriti una punizione, ma questa volta penso che ti sei punito abbastanza. Ci vorrà un po' di tempo per guarire quello squarcio nel braccio. Quando sentirai dolore sarà per te un promemoria che la verità è molto meno dolorosa della menzogna. Quando affronti la verità, devi affrontarla solo una volta, chiedere perdono e poi è finita. Quando menti, devi continuare a inventare sempre più bugie per cercare di coprire la prima, ma alla fine devi comunque affrontare la verità.”

           Isacco e Rebecca si amavano moltissimo ed erano molto felici insieme. Il Signore li aveva benedetti e li aveva fatti diventare molto prosperi nel paese di Canaan. La vita non avrebbe potuto essere migliore per loro due, fino a quando…

           Un'enorme carestia colpì la loro terra. Non pioveva…e non pioveva…e non pioveva….

dry land            Per Isacco, non avere pioggia era un grosso, grosso problema. La terra si era prosciugata e i raccolti non erano cresciuti. Cominciarono a rimanere senza cibo per le loro numerose greggi e mandrie, oltre che per la loro famiglia.

           “Oh, cosa faremo?”  chiese Rebecca preoccupata, chiedendosi se ci sarebbe stato abbastanza cibo per il resto della settimana.

           “Una cosa è certa,” rispose Isacco. “Se rimaniamo qui moriremo tutti di fame.”

Dimenticò di pregare per questa situazione…

Dimenticò di fidarsi di Dio…

Dimenticò che suo padre Abramo non voleva che si trasferisse da Canaan…

Dimenticò la promessa che sarebbero stati curati e benedetti dal Signore…

           Isacco prese la sua decisione finale.

“Non c'è nient'altro che possiamo fare,” disse un giorno a Rebecca. “Dobbiamo solo muoverci.”

           “Ma dove andremo?” chiese Rebecca.

in no time “Mio padre mi ha detto che una volta viveva in un posto chiamato Gherar. Ha scavato diversi pozzi mentre viveva lì, quindi dovrebbe esserci molta acqua. Ci andremo.”

           La questione era stata risolta. Isacco e Rebecca condivisero la notizia con la loro famiglia. Tutti avrebbero dovuto impacchettare tutto ciò che possedevano e trasferirsi a Gherar. Poiché il Signore aveva riccamente benedetto Isacco e Rebecca, avevano un enorme compito da svolgere. Che periodo impegnativo fu per Isacco e la sua famiglia, i loro servitori e le ancelle, mentre tiravano fuori dal terreno i pali della tenda e piegavano le pesanti tende in piccoli fagotti. Caricarono tutti i loro averi sui cammelli e sugli asini, poi radunarono le pecore, le mucche, le galline e tutti gli altri animali. Quando tutto fu pronto, fecero una lunga carovana e si misero in cammino verso Gherar.

Isaac was blessed            Quando finalmente Isacco e la sua famiglia raggiunsero la terra di Gherar, Isacco andò dal re per ottenere il permesso di vivere lì. Il re Abimelec diede la sua approvazione, così Isacco andò nel luogo in cui suo padre aveva vissuto una volta, sistemò le tende, disfece i bagagli e vi si stabilì.

           Il Signore fu misericordioso e apparve ad Isacco, rassicurandolo e ripetendo la stessa promessa che aveva fatto ad Abramo tanti anni prima. “Abiterai in questo paese di Gherar e io sarò con te. Ti benedirò e farò di te una grande nazione e tutte le nazioni della terra saranno benedette perché tuo padre Abramo mi ha obbedito.” Isacco era felice ed eccitato che il Signore gli avesse parlato e gli avesse assicurato che tutto sarebbe andato bene qui a Gherar.

           Isacco visse a Gherar per lungo tempo e si era fatto molti amici. Un giorno, mentre parlava con alcuni degli altri uomini, uno di loro disse, “È sicuramente una bella donna quella che hai nel tuo accampamento. Chi è?”

           In quel momento, Isacco di nuovo sembrò aver dimenticato che il Signore aveva promesso di essere con loro. “Lei è mia sorella,” mentì. Aveva paura di dire agli uomini che era sua moglie, perché temeva che uno di loro potesse ucciderlo e prendere Rebecca per moglie.

           Un giorno il re Abimelec stava guardando fuori dalla sua finestra e vide Isacco abbracciare e baciare Rebecca. Andò alla porta e chiamò Isacco. “Perché ci hai detto che quella donna era tua sorella?” chiese arrabbiato. “È molto evidente che è tua moglie! Perché ci hai mentito?”

           “Io…avevo paura,” sbottò Isacco. “È così bella e avevo paura che uno degli uomini la volesse come moglie e mi uccidesse.”

           “Ma non sapevi che uno di noi avrebbe potuto prenderla per moglie, non sapendo che era la tua? Avresti potuto far peccare uno di noi!”

corn            Isacco era pieno di vergogna. Non aveva considerato il danno e la grande vergogna che avrebbe potuto causare a Rebecca. Era molto dispiaciuto per la sua bugia e si scusò profondamente. Il re Abimelec lo perdonò e disse agli uomini dei dintorni la verità, cioè che Rebecca era la moglie di Isacco. Agli uomini ordinò anche di non fare del male a Isacco o Rebecca.

           Dopo aver confessato la menzogna, Isacco e Rebecca e la loro famiglia vissero pacificamente a Gherar. Quell'anno, Isacco piantò delle colture e ricevette un raccolto incredibile — 100 volte più di quello che aveva piantato. Dio lo benedisse abbondantemente e ci fu cibo in abbondanza per tutta la famiglia e per tutti gli animali.

Anche quando sbagliamo, Dio sarà misericordioso
se confessiamo e ci pentiamo.

“Se confessiamo i nostri peccati, egli è fedele e
giusto da perdonarci i peccati e purificarci da ogni
iniquità” (1 Giovanni 1:9a).

“Non mentite gli uni agli altri, perché
vi siete spogliati dell'uomo vecchio con le sue
opere” (Colossesi 3:9).

“Non ho gioia piú grande di questa: sapere che
i miei figli camminano nella verità” (3 John 1:4).
