“Ti ho spinto abbastanza, ora tocca a me!” si lamentò Cesare con suo fratello maggiore che era seduto nel go-kart e girava il volante per fare ampie curve nel cortile.
“Ancora un po', Cesare! Sono più grande e ho il diritto di essere spinto di più!” rispose Tommaso.
“Mamma, mamma, ma-a-a-mma!” gridò Cesare. La loro madre guardò ansiosa attraverso la finestra per vedere di cosa si trattava. “Mamma, Tommaso non vuole farmi fare un giro sul go-kart! Non è giusto, perché invece io lo devo spingere per tutto il tempo!”
C'era grande fermento a Gerusalemme per la festa della Pasqua e le strade polverose erano piene di gente che venivano da lontano e da vicino per la celebrazione. C'erano anche Gesù e i suoi discepoli. Dopo una lunga giornata, si sedettero stanchi e affamati al tavolo della cena nella stanza al piano di sopra.
Gesù sapeva che presto sarebbe stato crocifisso, ma era determinato a fare la volontà del suo Padre celeste. Lui aveva affidato a Gesù la salvezza di tutta l'umanità, perché Gesù amava teneramente il suo popolo. Li amava così tanto che avrebbe dato la vita per loro.
Il loro ospite aveva fornito una ciotola d'acqua e un asciugamano per il gruppo di uomini stanchi in modo che potessero lavarsi i piedi sporchi dopo essersi tolti i sandali. Tuttavia, non c'era nessun servitore, come invece era consuetudine, per lavare i piedi.
Mentre erano seduti a tavola, Gesù si alzò, si spogliò delle sue vesti, prese l'asciugamano e se lo allacciò intorno alla vita, proprio come facevano i servi a quei tempi.
“Cosa sta facendo ora il Maestro?” si chiedevano in silenzio i discepoli. “Non fa mai qualcosa senza motivo.”
Gesù si era inginocchiato davanti a ogni discepolo e, come un servo, aveva lavato loro i piedi e li aveva asciugati con l'asciugatoio che gli pendeva ai fianchi. Alcuni dei discepoli avevano gli occhi pieni di lacrime, mentre altri erano senza parole. Quando fu il turno di Giuda, una lacrima rotolò sulla guancia di Gesù, perché sapeva che Giuda lo avrebbe tradito. Eppure aveva lavato anche i suoi piedi.
Quando Gesù raggiunse Pietro per lavargli i piedi, Pietro non riuscì più a trattenersi. “Come potrebbe il Maestro umiliarsi per fare il lavoro di un servitore?” pensò tra sé. “Signore,” chiese, “stai per lavare i MIEI piedi?”
Rispose Gesù, “Quello che sto facendo, tu non puoi capirlo ora, ma dopo lo capirai.”
Pietro non voleva permettere a Gesù di umiliarsi davanti a persone come lui, un umile pescatore, così disse a Gesù, “Non mi laverai mai i piedi!”
Rispose Gesù, “Se non ti lavo, non avrai parte con me.”
Questo spaventò Pietro perché desiderava così tanto avere una parte con Gesù. Rispose subito, “Signore, non solo i miei piedi, ma anche le mie mani e la mia testa!”
Gesù sapeva che Pietro aveva un cuore buono e gli rispose, “Chi si è già lavato ha bisogno solo di lavarsi i piedi per essere completamente puro, e tu sei puro, ma non tutti lo sono.”
Disse che non tutti erano puri, perché il cuore di Giuda non era puro. Gesù sapeva che Giuda aveva già tramato con i farisei per tradirlo.
Quando Gesù ebbe finito, indossò le sue vesti, si mise a tavola con loro e disse, “Capite quello che vi ho fatto? Mi chiamate Maestro e Signore, e avete ragione, perché io lo sono. Se dunque io, vostro Signore e Maestro, vi ho lavato i piedi, anche voi dovete lavarvi i piedi gli uni gli altri. Perché vi ho dato un esempio, che dovreste fare come ho fatto con voi. Anche se vi ho lavato i piedi, non siete più importanti di me. Ora che sapete come seguire il Mio esempio, Dio vi benedirà se vi servirete l'un l'altro con amore.”
RICORDA:
Non importa quanto pensi di essere importante. Non sei mai troppo importante per fare qualcosa di buono per qualcun altro.

1. Tommaso si è comportato bene? Perché si o perché no?
2. Cesare ha risposto nel modo giusto? Perché si o perché no?
3. Cosa pensi che abbia detto loro la madre?
5. In che modo Cesare e Tommaso possono seguire l'esempio di Gesù in questa storia?
UN VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Il frutto dello Spirito invece è amore, gioia, pace,
pazienza, benevolenza, bontà, fedeltà, mansuetudine,
autocontrollo; contro queste cose non c'è legge”
(Galati 5:22-23).
DELLE ALTERNATIVE AL VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Beati i mansueti, perché erediteranno
la terra” (Matteo 5:5).
“Prendete su di voi il mio giogo e imparate da me,
perché io sono mansueto e umile di cuore,
e voi troverete riposo alle anime vostre”
(Matteo 11:29).
“Abbiate tra di voi un medesimo sentimento.
ma lasciatevi attrarre dalle umili.
Non vi stimate saggi da voi stessi” (Romani 12:16).
“Umiliatevi davanti al Signore,
ed egli v'innalzerà” (Giacomo 4:10).
APPLICAZIONE PRATICA
Puoi nominare alcune faccende che ritieni non valgano il tuo tempo e vorresti poter pagare qualcun altro per farle? Che ne dici di pulire la tua stanza, la stanza dei giochi o il bagno? O che ne dici di portare fuori la spazzatura o pulire il tuo animale domestico? Queste faccende non sembrano molto affascinanti, vero? Ma pensi che siano importanti? Come mai?
Un giorno, mentre andavano a casa di qualcuno, i discepoli di Gesù stavano discutendo, cercando di decidere chi di loro sarebbe stato il più grande. Una volta entrato in casa, sapendo di cosa stavano discutendo, Gesù chiese ai discepoli di sedersi con lui. Disse che chiunque desiderasse essere il primo doveva essere l'ultimo e il servitore di tutti. Poi si abbassò e sollevò un bambino tra le sue braccia. Con tutti gli occhi puntati sul bambino, Gesù disse, “Chiunque accoglie un bambino così per amore del mio nome, accoglie Me, e chi accoglie Me accoglie non solo Me, ma Colui che Mi ha mandato.”
Gesù insegnò la migliore lezione di tutte, quando si inginocchiò come servo e lavò i piedi ai suoi discepoli. Proprio come i bambini facevano le faccende umili ai tempi di Gesù, Gesù era disposto a umiliarsi come servitore dei suoi discepoli. Si è umiliato ancora di più andando alla croce e morendo per i nostri peccati in modo che potessimo essere salvati.
Allora che ne dici di te? Sei disposto a svolgere compiti umili con un cuore gioioso sapendo che li stai facendo per Gesù? Puoi andare oltre facendo ancora di più, fermandoti per incoraggiare qualcuno che vedi fare un lavoro umile. Ad esempio, la prossima volta che incontri una donna delle pulizie che spazza i pavimenti, incoraggiala ringraziandola per l'importante lavoro che sta svolgendo agli occhi del Signore.

servire gli altri con amore. Nel tuo Nome ti prego. Amen.
