“Caterina è così carina! Lei è scelta sempre per prima. Non importa per cosa. Sono proprio stufa e annoiata. Non più sopportarlo. Come mai qualcuno non sceglie me?” Vichy girò su i suoi tacchi e salì stancamente le scale della sua stanza, andando quasi ad inciampare sul cane, che fece un guaito e scappò via.
Dopo averla lasciata calmare per un paio di minuti, la mamma, si diresse sulle scale e bussò gentilmente alla porta della camera da letto. “Hai qualcosa in contrario se entro per qualche minuto?”
Udendo i singhiozzi di Vichy, la mamma girò la maniglia della porta ed entrò piano. Vichy piangeva distesa sul letto, la testa nascosta nel cuscino.
“Vichy,” disse dolcemente la mamma, e amorevolmente le asciugò una lacrima, “Tu sai quanto sei molto speciale per papà e me e per il nostro Padre Celeste. Per me tu sei la più bella ragazza che ci sia nel mondo intero.”
Ester guardò il Re e fece un piccolissimo sorriso. Lui la guardò fisso per alcuni istanti ed Ester si domandò cosa lui stesse pensando a suo riguardo. Lei studiava tranquillamente il suo volto impenetrabile, pensando che in nessun modo fosse abbastanza buona per lui.
Improvvisamente, proruppe in un ampio sorriso. “Qual è il tuo nome?”
Ester inchinò il capo e guardò il pavimento. “Ester, mio Signore.”
“Ester,” ripeté il Re. Lei guardò la sua faccia sorridente e arrossì lievemente. “Vieni qui.”
Ester si fermò per un attimo, poi si alzò e avanzò lentamente verso il suo trono. Lui prese la sua mano e la baciò gentilmente.
“Ho visto la bellezza fra le bellezze. Bella nel cuore e nel corpo!” esclamò lui.
Ester sorrise fra se, ma continuò a guardare il pavimento.
“Non c'è bisogno di avere paura. Io sarò un Re molto potente, ma non mordo,” Disse il Re guardando premurosamente Ester.
Lei lo guardò e poi guardò Hegai, che stava in un angolo sorridendo. Lei gli sorrise, realizzando che prima le aveva detto la stessa cosa a proposito del Re.
Il Re Serse seguì il suo sguardo e fece cenno ad Hegai di venire su.
“Questa donna, Hegai, sarà la mia Regina. Tu hai avuto buona cura di lei e la sua bellezza supera tutte le altre, interiormente ed esteriormente. Grazie.”
Hegai annuì e disse, “Tu sei più che benvenuto, grande Re ed io sono onorato di essere al tuo servizio.”
Poi il Re disse ai servi di portare la corona della vecchia Regina Vashsti, la prese e la pose gentilmente sul capo di Ester. “Adesso, Ester, sei tu la mia Regina.”
Ester gli sorrise. “Ne sono grandemente onorata, mio Signore.”
“Anch'io,” le rispose con un gran sorriso. “Darò un banchetto, una grande festa per celebrare la mia nuova Regina, la Regina Este!”
“Che dono meraviglioso!” esclamò Ester quando il quarto Principe le presentò il suo dono. Chiuse i suoi occhi e odorò la bottiglia di profumo. “Grazie!”
Il Principe annuì ed inchinatosi, andò via.
Ester si sentì regale. Ma ora lo era. Lei era una Regina. Il Re Serse stava dando una grande festa in onore della sua nuova Regina e ognuno avrebbe portato loro i doni e mostrato il loro rispetto. L'intero party fu meraviglioso ed Ester si sentiva Meravigliosa. Essere una Regina non era poi così male come lei s'aspettava e il Re Serse era un uomo meraviglioso. Dopotutto, pensava che forse non sarebbe stato così cattivo.
Mardocheo sospirò e si appoggiò alle mura del castello. Aveva perso Ester, ma era felice di poterla vedere quasi tutti i giorni.. Ma le aveva detto di nascondere al proprio marito di essere Ebrea. Era molto pericoloso, forse, non tanto che lo sapesse il Re, ma che lo scoprissero altri.
Mardocheo agitò la testa. “Non è buono pensare a tali cose,” pensò fra se. “Ester starà bene.”
Delle voci basse lo risvegliarono dai suoi pensieri profondi e si incamminò lungo il muro, verso la porta.
“Il prossimo venerdì il Re andrà a caccia. Allora potremo ucciderlo,” sussurrò una voce profonda. Mardocheo trattenne il fiato!
“No, ci saranno molte persone,” disse un'altra voce. “è meglio farlo mentre sta dormendo.”
Mardocheo sbirciò dietro l'angolo e vide gli uomini che stavano li. Spalancò gli occhi quando riconobbe Bigthan e Terish. Stette in piedi contro il muro e continuò ad ascoltare.
“Allora, quando ci sbarazzeremo di lui? E' meglio farlo il più presto possibile, nel caso che questo si scopra!”
“Lo so.Lo so. Ma dobbiamo stare attenti a non farci prendere. Forse sarebbe meglio farlo mentre sta dormendo.”
“Si, forse è meglio. Quando lo faremo?”
Mardocheo si avvicinò di più per udire la risposta dell'altro uomo. Non osava respirare.
“Questa notte,” sussurrò l'altro uomo.
Mardocheo chiuse gli occhi, poi corse velocemente nel giardino vicino la camera di Ester.
PENSA!
1. Come ti sentiresti se stessi in piedi davanti al Re?
2. Pensi di sentirti un po' impaurita?
3. Ester era bella solo esteriormente?
4. Mardocheo si trovò al posto giusto nel momento giusto. Cosa pensi che sarebbe successo, se non avesse udito quegli uomini tramare la morte del Re?
5. Pensi che mantenga il segreto?

Tu sei molto speciale per Dio, solo per come sei.
